Stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant is a treatment that replaces damaged blood cells with healthy ones, this treatment has been used to treat blood cancers for many years and our team of expert Consultants are highly experienced in this area of medicine.
There are different types of stem cell transplants, the most common are:
- Autologous transplant – using your own stem cells
- Allogeneic transplant – using a donors cells
Depending on your diagnosis you may be able to use your own stem cells for the transplant; if you are not able to use your own stem cells then a donor is required. A donor could be a family member who is considered to be a good match (related donor), or it may be from an unrelated donor who has decided to donate their stem cells to the British Bone Marrow Registry.
Your consultant and medical team will discuss your diagnosis and treatment options with you in detail so that you can make an informed decision about your care.
