Gullet (Oesophagus) Cancer

Cancers of the gullet are also known as oesophagus cancer and can be broken down into two common types:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma – originating in the thin cells which make up the lining of the oesophagus
  • Adenocarcinoma – originating in the glands which are found in the lining of the oesophagus and are used to make mucus. This form of oesophagus cancer is increasing.

Things to look out for

Symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Pain or difficulty when swallowing
  • Vomiting or regurgitation (when food is brought up which has not yet entered the stomach)
  • Hoarseness and/or a cough
  • Pain in the back and/or behind the breastbone
