At The Christie Private Care we provide access to some of the latest and most innovative treatments and techniques in cancer care, our environment and facilities mean we can provide access to treatments that are not always available in other private centres. To achieve this we work with some of the UKs leading consultants who are at the forefront of pioneering patient care.
You can find out more about some of the innovative treatments available at The Christie Private Care below.
Accuracy and dexterity with minimal invasion
At The Christie Private Care we offer direct access to the cutting-edge Da VinciR S robot to provide urological, gynaecology and colorectal surgery.
The Da Vinci operating robot has been available through The Christie Private Care since 2008, and our highly skilled consultants have a wealth of laparoscopic surgical experience. A specialist robotics-trained nurse assists the consultant during the procedure, and theatre teams have undertaken surgical robotic training to ensure maximum effectiveness.
As with the traditional minimally invasive surgical method, the procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia. A number of small openings (ports) are made, each about 5–12mm in length, through which a variety of different instruments can be introduced. These instruments have a greater range of movement than the human hand, allowing the surgeon to carry out an operation in smaller and more difficult-to-reach areas within the body.
Through a magnified viewfinder, the surgeon examines images sent to the console by the endoscopic camera inside the body. The surgeon’s hands are then placed in ultrasensitive controls, allowing the robot’s arms to mimic, with extreme precision, the surgeon’s movements.
This advance in surgical technology means that you can now better outcomes and fewer effects from major and routine operations than ever before including:
- reduced trauma to the body
- less anaesthesia
- reduced blood loss
- lower risk of infection
- effective control of disease
- less scarring and improved cosmetics
- a shorter hospital stay
- a faster recovery time and return to normal activities
- improved and early return of continence and sexual function (for men undergoing robotic prostatectomies).
Not all surgery can be carried out as robotic surgery, your consultant will discuss the most appropriate treatment options with you based on your condition.

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)
HIPEC surgery is an innovative and complex procedure used to treat colorectal cancer which has spread to the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum). Most colorectal cancers start in the inner surface of the bowel wall, in some cases it can spread to the abdominal cavity and affect the surface which is called the peritoneum. Traditional treatment of the cancer that affects the peritoneum has not been very effective. HIPEC treatment is an innovative treatment that aims to treat the cancer of the peritoneum and has been effective for some patients.
Surgery has not traditionally been used with the intention of curing cancer once it has spread to the peritoneum. However there is evidence that if the size and spread of the cancer is limited then a specialised surgical technique can be used. This is called ‘Cytoreductive Surgery’ and removes all the evident cancer, this may involve major surgery to remove organs in the abdomen and peritoneum.
If your surgeon is able to remove most or all of the cancer, then heated chemotherapy drugs are put into the abdomen to kill any cancer cells that are not visible. This process is known as HIPEC and helps to destroy any cancer cells that can’t be seen but could go on to develop into further tumours.
This is a highly complex and specialised procedure and is not suitable for all patients. Our expert peritoneal team is one of only a few teams offering this across the UK.

Selective Internal Radiotherapy Treatment+
Selective Internal Radiotherapy Treatment (SIRT) uses small radioactive beads to treat liver tumours that cannot be surgically removed. SIRT is commonly used to treat secondary tumours (metastatic tumours) in the liver.
SIRT delivers high-dose radiotherapy treatment to liver tumours by injecting coated beads called microspheres through a catheter. The microspheres contain a radioactive substance and stop the flow of blood to tumours, killing the cancerous cells. Your treatment might involve SIRT in combination with a short course of chemotherapy. This can help to make SIRT more effective.
SIRT treatment will not be suitable for everyone with liver tumours. Your consultant and medical team will discuss the best treatment options available to you.
SIRT is only available at specialist centres, if you think you may benefit from SIRT treatment and would like to find out more please contact us for further information.
Some new and approved safe drugs are not available on the NHS. At The Christie Private Care you may be able to access these drugs, including some immunotherapies, through self-funding.
If you would like to find out more about self-funding specific drug therapies please contact us.
The reconstructive service we offer at The Christie Private Care is a fundamental part of the care we offer here. Not everyone will require reconstructive surgery as part of their cancer treatment, but for those that do we understand how important this service is.
Our team of expert Oncoplastic Surgeons carry out both routine and highly complex reconstructive procedures, including innovative and effective microsurgical reconstruction to provide patients with the best possible outcomes.
Sometimes it is possible to have your cancer surgery and subsequent reconstructive surgery in one operation. Your consultant will discuss your options around reconstructive surgery with you in more detail so that you can make an informed decision about your care.
The service at The Christie Private Care specialises in head and neck, breast and skin reconstructive surgery and is available to patients having their full cancer treatment with us, or, who would just like to access this specialist reconstructive team.
